Your Pre and Post Baby Swimming Lesson Guide
A huge part of going swimming is getting ready to get in the pool and changing after. To make this as stress-free as possible, we’ve provided a pre and post swimming lesson guide to support you. Scroll to discover more!
1. Before the Lesson:
Small Feed Before Travelling: We recommend feeding little ones one hour before the lesson - just keep it a light one. With toddlers, we also suggest leaving an hour before their meal and lesson.
Leave Home Early: Get your bag ready in advance, so you’ll only need to quickly double-check the contents before leaving. Give yourself plenty of time to drive to the venue and park or check public transport routes before leaving home. We recommend arriving around 10 minutes before your class, so you can get ready without feeling rushed. This will also give you and your little one the chance to settle in and get your baby accustomed to the new environment before the lesson.
Layer Up: Dress your baby in easy-to-remove layers. A onesie over the swim nappy can be quickly removed when it’s time to change, before and after your lesson. Our Waterproof Onesies are ideal for the pool as they are water repellent and super cosy, featuring a super soft fleece lining to keep your little one warm. Plus, they double as the perfect puddle suit if it’s raining outside!
Choose easy-on thrown clothes for yourself as well, like some comfy trousers and a sweater or a loose dress and slip-on shoes; anything that will make your post-swim change easier. Unfortunately, we don’t offer our snuggly waterproof onesies for grown-ups (yet!) but you can bring your own towelling gown if you want.
Use the Waterproof Changing Mat: Lay out your waterproof changing mat on the bench or floor to create a clean space for changing your baby. This will also help keep them comfortable and dry until they enter the pool. Plus, it will make it easier to change your little one quickly and easily when you arrive at the venue. We always recommend bringing a spare swim nappy or add nappy liners just in case as well.
In need of a waterproof changing mat? Our Bubba Changing Mats are made of neoprene, they’re flexible, easy to fold, and slip proof.
2. After the Lesson:
Wrap Your Baby in a Towel: As soon as you exit the pool, wrap your baby in a towel to keep them warm and happy while you get changed again. Babies can lose heat quickly, so it’s important to get them dry and warm after the swim. Whip off the swimwear as quickly as possible and cover your baby with another towel until they are warm and dry. Consider bringing a wet bag inside your bag to keep any wet swim nappies and swimwear in there. Alternatively, you could just wrap these inside your towel.
Dry and Change Promptly: Although it’s nice to have a quick shower with your baby after a swim, you might find it’s just easier to do so once you get home, especially if the changing rooms are busy or your baby is due a feed or snack. Some carers find it easier to get themselves dressed first, while your little one stays wrapped in a dry hooded towel. Once your little one is dry, change them into a clean nappy and warm clothes.
Time for That Post-swim Snack: Swimming is a great exercise for babies, and they might feel hungry afterwards. A quick snack can help keep them happy while you finish getting dressed.
Have a Dummy or Toy at Hand: You can use a dummy or your baby’s favourite toy to soothe your little one on the way home. Have you checked out our adorable Bubba comforter and soft toys?
3. Additional Tips for a Great First Experience
Stay Relaxed: Babies can pick up on your emotions, so try to stay calm and positive. A relaxed attitude will help your baby feel safe and happy in the water. Try to remain patient after your lesson too, to support positive associations with the new pool routine.Follow your Teacher’s Lead: Our teachers are experienced in guiding carers and babies through their first swimming lesson. They’ll provide you with tips and support throughout the class, so don’t hesitate to ask questions.
Enjoy the Moment: Your baby’s first swim lesson is a special experience. Take a deep breath, enjoy the bonding time, and have fun watching your little one explore the water.
At Water Babies, we’re here to make your baby’s swimming journey as joyful and stress-free as possible. By following these tips, you’ll be well-prepared for a successful first swim lesson. We look forward to seeing you and your baby at the pool!
